LVL 1
Level 1, known as “The Habitable Zone,” is a massive, looping industrial warehouse and parking garage consisting of concrete walls, exposed rebar, low-hanging fog, and erratic, flickering lights that plunge the area into total darkness during random blackout events. It is classified as a relatively safe Class 1 zone, making it a crucial sanctuary where major factions like the M.E.G. (Major Explorer Group) Base Alpha and the B.N.T.G. (Backrooms Non-Trading Group) have established heavily populated outposts and supply hubs. Survival here depends on scavenging randomly spawning wooden crates for food, flashlights, and vital Almond Water dripping from the pipes, though wanderers must navigate carefully since hallways dynamically alter and loop the moment eye contact with landmarks is broken. While entities are rare during illuminated periods, the blackouts trigger dangerous hunting phases for hostile entities like Hounds, Skin-Stealers, and Dullers, forcing survivors to either hide or seek escape by walking down exceptionally long corridors to find fire doors leading to Level 2, locating blast doors to The Hub, or noclipping through specific walls containing electrical outlets to reach Level 188.
What does level 1 look like?
Level 1 of the Backrooms, known as the “Habitable Zone,” resembles a massive, dark concrete warehouse with continuous fluorescent lighting, dripping condensation puddles, and inconsistent fog. Unlike Level 0, it contains consistent electricity and randomly spawning supply crates filled with useful gear like Almond Water, alongside strange junk like crayons or car keys. Due to these available resources, human survivors have built permanent outposts here, including the M.E.G. Base Alpha and Trader Keep, though wanderers must still actively dodge hostile entities like Smilers, Hounds, and Skin-Stealers.
What Entities are in level 1?
The short answer is Artur’s mum, but if you want a more detailed description; Level 1 of the Backrooms, commonly referred to as “The Habitable Zone,” presents a significant escalation in danger compared to Level 0 due to the sudden and frequent appearance of hostile entities. While traversing this massive, warehouse-like expanse of concrete walls, exposed rebar, and low-hanging fog, wanderers must remain constantly vigilant against a diverse ecosystem of threats. Among the most common and terrifying inhabitants are Smilers, predatory entities identifiable only by their glowing, razor-sharp teeth that stalk the dark, unlit corridors of the level. Wanderers must also contend with Hounds, aggressive humanoids that crawl on all fours and attack if eye contact is broken, and Clumps, horrific masses of tangled limbs that hide in tight spaces to grab unsuspecting victims. Additionally, Level 1 plays host to both Adult and Child Facelings, anomalous humanoids lacking facial features that can turn highly aggressive depending on the environment, as well as skin-stealing entities that mimic human voices to lure prey into traps. Environmental hazards like Dullers lurking in ventilation shafts and toxic infestations of Deathmoths further complicate survival, transforming this seemingly stable warehouse into a claustrophobic gauntlet where light management and sensory awareness are your only lifelines.
